Tasked with designing a minimalist extension to an 18th-century country house, we embarked on a journey that delicately balanced preserving the historical charm of the original structure and infusing it with sleek, contemporary family focussed addition. The extension combines tradition and modernity, offering an open-plan kitchen, dining, and family space, rooted in strong sustainability credentials. Asked early on to introduce a green roof and high performing triple-glazed sliding doors to reduce the designs environmental footprint Marc and Janes is testament to the harmony of past and present.

The foundation of the design rests on clean lines and a monochromatic colour palette. White walls and large glass windows provide a striking contrast to the original stonework of the country house, ensuring the new addition complements rather than competes with the historic architecture. Inside, a spacious open plan layout creates an airy, uncluttered atmosphere that encourages a sense of calm and relaxation. The use of sustainable materials is evident, with polished screed floor with water based underfloor heating and timber cabinetry and cladding adding warmth to the space and a connection to nature.

Covered with a lush carpet of vegetation, a green roof adds a stunning visual element but also serves as an eco-friendly addition that improves insulation, reducing the need for heating and cooling, absorbs rainwater, reducing runoff and supporting local biodiversity. This sustainable touch is a nod to the future, highlighting the commitment to eco-conscious living.

Triple-glazed sliding doors further enhance the extension's sustainability credentials. These doors create a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces while providing exceptional thermal insulation. They maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting, and offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The doors also incorporate energy-efficient technology, making them an environmentally friendly choice.
