Stefan Shaw Studio were approached by a couple whose Victorian home in Norwood needed extending to meet their aspirations for family life. Drawing upon their belief in the power of naturalistic forms and soft flowing figures to calm and enrich the spirit our organically inspired project is a striking departure from the ordinary.

Did someone say green?! "Led by subtle organic tones, our design features an in-situ cast concrete plinth that mirrors the garden's palette, while cladding details beautifully mimic the veins of the most intricate leaf. The lily pad patio gracefully traverses a steep slope, connecting the garden and home, providing a space where family, friends, and wildlife coexist in balance.

Bold curves within the design infuse the space with vitality and character, a testament to fearless clients and brave architecture. But the design isn’t just about aesthetics; it carefully considers the property's relationship with its local context. It softens internal spaces, welcoming natural light deep into the plan and into neighbouring properties. Generous circular skylights and south-facing glass doors from Maxlight harness natural sunlight for both heating and cooling, in a design that embraces the benefits of Passive House principles to champion environmental and ecological sustainability.

Blue Engineering as structural engineers, our collaboration on this project goes beyond conventional construction practices by implementing innovative strategies to minimize construction waste. We have strategically tailored a range of unique structural components for off-site manufacturing, not only streamlining the construction process but also significantly reducing material waste. This forward-thinking approach not only enhances efficiency but also aligns with our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
