This full transformation of a mid-terrace,split level family home includes a significant amount of bespoke designed joinery, and illustrates how the delights of a 19th-century townhouse can be brought into the 21st century with a bold, delightful and crafted approach to design. The high-end refurbishment and double height extension brings drama and excitement to the every-day activities of the home, while retaining the original essence of the building.
Ina playful balance of original details of the Victorian Showcase home and a new contemporary interior design, old and new spaces are united with bright sunlight from either side of the home, functional in built furniture and provided with ingenious solutions to the questions modern family life poses.Integrated storage, data points in each room and future proved sound proofing blend comfort and technology sympathetically into the period details of the original building.
Removal of the split-level lower ground room to the rear allowed for the former dog-leg stair to be redesigned to provide uninterrupted views of the newly landscape rear garden through the house upon entry.
Two of the stacked windows were then combined to create a dramatic focal point for the project in the form of a bespoke triple height timber sash window to the rear facade. Married with a unique and bespoke timber panelled door and frame-less skylight above, the rear of the building opens onto the exterior and sky above with effortless fascination.
On first floor, the entire level was given over to indulgent luxury. The master suite with stunning double windows and full width and height wardrobes connects through into a garden facing en-suite large enough to house a marble clad bath, double walk in shower and floating console.
The basis of all design was rooted in a crafted approach to construction with exposed timber, marble and brick throughout. From top to bottom the finishes and colour pallet are clean, crisp and modern, and while delicate, come alive with the reflective hues and warm tones of the polished brass and glass details of the taps, power sockets, light fittings and furniture of the charismatic owners.
