The transformation of this mid-terrace, split level Victorian home illustrates how the delights of a 19th-century townhouse can be brought into the 21st century. Bold, and contemporary approach, the high-end refurbishment and double height extension brings drama and excitement to the every-day activities of the home, while retaining the historic essence of the building.
In a playful juxtaposition of old and new, the contemporary interior design unites the original building and newly formed double height extension. Spaces were formed for sunlight to penetrate deep into the plan from either side of the home, while bespoke built-in furniture and floor to ceiling glazing provides modern solutions to the questions modern home life poses. Integrated storage, data points in each room and soundproofing sympathetically blend comfort and technology into the period details of the original building.
Removal of the previous split-level lower ground floor room to the rear allowed for the original dog-leg stair to be re-aligned to provide uninterrupted views of the landscaped garden through the house upon entry. Two of the stacked windows were then combined to create a dramatic focal point for the project in the form of a more than double height sash windows by Original Timber Sash to the rear façade. Married with a bespoke panelled door and frameless skylight above, the rear of the building opens onto the exterior and sky above.
On first floor, the entire plan was given over to relaxation. The master suite with stunning double windows and full width and height wardrobes connects through into a garden facing ensuite large enough to house a marble clad bath, double walk-in shower and bespoke floating vanity console.
The basis of all design was rooted in a crafted approach to construction with exposed timber, marble, and brick throughout. From top to bottom the finishes and colour pallet are clean, crisp, and modern, and while delicate, come alive with the reflective hues and warm tones of the polished brass and glass details of the taps, power sockets, light fittings and furniture of the charismatic owners.
